FAQ
Some commonly asked questions and answers.

1
Do I need to register to attend?
Nope! There’s no registration. Just show up.
We’ll welcome you in, help you sign in and make sure you feel comfortable.
2
How much does it cost?
WFC is completely free to attend.
We believe cost shouldn’t be a barrier to participating in football.

We are a volunteer organisation, and rely on volunteers, sponsorship, funding, and fundraising to run the Centre.
We’re also able to keep the Centre free through the support of our gear sponsors — Inter Football and Capital Football — and through your kind donations.
3
Do you cancel if it rains/is bad weather? How will we know if there's a cancellation?
4
What do I need to bring?
Bring a drink bottle and wear anything comfortable that you can move in. Wear either sports shoes or football boots, both are totally fine to wear!
We provide all the footballs and gear.
5
What if I’m nervous or shy?
That’s totally okay, many people are!
Our sessions are gentle, welcoming, and built around meeting you where you’re at. You’re never expected to perform or “be good.” Just turning up is enough. There'll always be a friendly face from the WFC to greet you when you arrive (they'll be wearing a WFC badge or top) so say hi to them and ask them any questions your heart desires.
We also create space for connection during the sessions. You can participate in a way that feels right for you.

Additionally if you want to meet up with a WFC coach or assistant ahead of your first session, send us a message, and we can arrange for one of us to catch up with you over a coffee :)
6
What if I’ve never played before?
You’re in exactly the right place.
Most of our participants started with zero or limited experience. We run specific beginner groups that are fun, low-pressure, and easy to follow.
7
Who is the Women's Football Centre for?
WFC is for All Women and gender-diverse people aged 18+ who want to give football a go in a supportive, inclusive environment.
You might be:
-
New to football
-
Returning after a break
-
Looking to make friends
-
Wanting to feel more confident in sport
-
Just after a fun evening outdoors
You’re all welcome.

*including cis women, trans women and transfeminine women
8
Do I have to come every week?
Nope. You can come to as many or as few sessions as you like. There’s no pressure, and you won’t be behind if you miss a week.
Just come when it works for you!
9
Is it competitive?
Not at all!
We focus on fun, connection, and skill-building, not competition.
Our small-sided games are relaxed, and you’ll never be judged for your ability. The vibe is low-pressure and fully supportive!
10
Is it women-only?
Yes, and we’re trans and gender-diverse inclusive.
Our space is specifically for women and gender-diverse people aged 18 and older, particularly those who want to learn or return to football in a safe, inclusive environment.
11
Why do you do the name and sharing circles?
We know speaking in front of others can feel scary.
We include small moments for people to share their name, pronouns, and a weekly highlight (if they want) because it helps build community. You can say as much or as little as you want — even just saying your name goes a long way.
12
How is this different from a club or team?
WFC is not a football club, and you don’t need to join or sign up.
We don’t enter competitions or have regular trainings. We’re a skills centre, a community space to play, learn, and build confidence in a pressure-free way. Some people go on to join clubs after coming here, but that’s totally up to you.
13
What if I have an injury or find that something is limiting me?
That’s totally okay. You're welcome to modify anything, sit parts out, or just watch — there’s no pressure to do everything.
We want everyone to feel included, even if you're recovering, adapting, or just figuring things out.
Listening to your body is always encouraged, and we're here to support you however we can.
14
What if I have more questions or want to learn how football works in Wellington?
Awesome. we love curiosity!
If you're keen to learn more about how local football works (like winter teams, futsal, or other playing options), just come chat to anyone wearing a Women's Football Centre top! We’re happy to help explain how it all fits together or point you in the right direction.
We also send out handouts once you sign in, listing local playing opportunities and playing pathways if you want to keep playing.
If you have any questions we don't cover during the session, feel free to go to the Coaches and Kimberley during the 8:30pm Extra Time, and they'll be able to to answer your questions.
15
Are you planning to expand outside of Wellington?
We’d absolutely love to, one day! Right now, the Women’s Football Centre is run by a small team based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, and we’re focused on making our local sessions the best they can be.
16
What's the purpose of the Women's Football Centre? Why did you set it up?
We set up the WFC because we wanted there to be a space that was welcoming and safe for women to try football or get back into it after a break.
We know how intimidating it can feel to start something new especially a sport many began in their childhood, so we created a space where women can have fun, learn some skills, and connect with others with no pressure, no judgment.
It’s about building confidence, learning new skills, meeting new people, and enjoying the game together.
17
Why do you only run during the Summer?
We run WFC in the summer because it's the only time turf space is widely available. In winter, most fields are booked out by clubs for league training and games.

Plus, it’s a great way to ease into pre-season training (a time right before the football season begins when people try out different clubs and start training/warming up with their teams for the winter).
Pre-season kicks off in early/mid February, just as we finish up for the season, so WFC is the perfect way to prepare yourself for a pre-season if you're keen to join a club in the winter! You’ll already have some skills under your belt, know what to expect, and feel more confident stepping into a team environment.
18
I see you take photos and videos at the sessions, what if I don't want to be in these?
That's totally fine if you don't want your photo/video taken!

Just find Kimberley at the start of the session (she'll be the one walking around with a camera around her neck) and tell her you don't want to be in any photos and videos and she won't include you in the imagery from that session.
19
Do you have an age limit?
The Centre is for All Women over the age of 18 years old, with absolutely no upper age limit. We've have attendees ranging in range from 18 to their 60s.

Note: If you are just shy of your 18th birthday, you're more than welcome to come along too.
Any other questions?
Feel free to get in touch! :)
